As an attorney, Bruce E. Endy did a lot of things as a labor lawyer. He negotiated contracts, tried various cases before the National Labor Relations Board, fought against strike injunctions, and fought for the right of workers to organize and join unions. But this memoir doesn't cover that part of Endy's life as an attorney. In Saving Harry, Endy focuses on the work he did helping everyday people (the Harrys and Harriets of the world) earn unemployment compensation, receive health care, and get their jobs back. Each chapter focuses on a particular Harry or Harriet- generally a member of one of the unions Endy represented who was, for a variety of reasons, out of work or in a tough spot. Saving Harry discusses the personal and legal drama of people facing down courts, corporations, and other daunting, sometimes scary, obstacles to finding justice with help from a caring lawyer.

Endy's study of justice in the workplace, along with his calm but unflinching dissection of the consequences of income disparity in America, is proof positive that some members of that endangered species, the pragmatic idealist, have escaped extinction and continue to survive among us. His book is a calm but compelling argument for the importance of organized labor, and for taking a clear look at the deleterious consequences of having developed a political system that is so tilted toward domination by the affluent and by those who do their bidding. His voice is modest and insistent, and particularly compelling in the current overheated run-up to the 2016 elections, dominated by moneyed candidates who give lip service to the plight of the middle class and labor, but seem particularly obtuse to their plight, except, perhaps, to the concerns of their minor leagues, the upper middle class. This is a book that deserves wide reading, and might be a good recommendation for a young person considering a career in the law.Product details

Saving Harry Justice Work Unions Bruce E Endy 9781483435619 Books Reviews
What's it like to be a labor lawyer? Bruce Endy has made a career of representing Unions and their workers "in the trenches." His stories vividly and clearly bring to life how disputes over life-changing events - like being fired ("terminated" in management lingo) - get resolved before neutral arbitrators. He gives us just enough knowledge about the law to understand the standards that apply, yet never loses sight of how and why human nature always should be the central focus. This is "must" reading for any law students or disallusioned lawyers who want to devote their careers to helping the "little guy," even (or should that be, especially) where the Union pays the bill.
'Saving Harry' depicts in true life form the struggle and pressure that union workers experience when they are the subject of disciplinarian action - termination or suspension - initiated by their employer because of alleged inappropriate conduct. The author, Attorney Bruce Endy, recounts in chapter form many of the cases he has handled for such union workers, and the all too often unreasonable stance taken by employers in disciplining union workers. Each chapter is devoted to one case, and the facts and circumstances which unfold provide suspense through to the final decision on whether the union worker will be allowed to retain his job. And yes , there are cases where the employer 's position is affirmed. But the unique characteristic of this book is that it can be read for pure enjoyment, while at the same time used as a teaching guide for those interested in learning and understanding employee/ employer relations in the context of disciplinary legal proceedings .Highly Recommended!! 5 Stars.
Easy read
I loved the book. It was easy reading not filled with legal jargon. I found each case to be most interesting. I was sorry it ended "so soon"
